INFECTION CONTROL
The following infection control information given to you is intended to expose you to the proper techniques, information and requirements when dealing with foreign materials, such as blood.
Waste materials are a key channel for blood borne pathogens, saliva, etc. to attain transmission. There are many other types of infectious material that can cause disease or even death. Infectious materials include:
- body fluid
- body fluid contaminated with blood
- amniotic fluid
- cerebrospinal fluid
- synovial fluid
- pleural fluid
- pericardial fluid
- peritoneal fluid
- semen
- vaginal secretions
- saliva in dental procedures
- exposed organs
HIV/HBV-infected tissues and all animal parts should also be discarded with caution.
Methods for Handling Exposure:
Use personal protective clothing and equipment.
Schedule for application of provisions of the standard and specify the procedure.
Employers must set forth guidelines for evaluating circumstances surrounding exposure incidents.
Employers must review and update guidelines at least annually (required by State law).
Employers require employees in writing to identify responsibilities and procedures.
